Today, one of the growing problem that every country has to face is the soil contamination as this would also affect the quality of produce that the land will provide for our consumption. There are several things that made up the soil and these are the basic organic material such as limestone and granite and there are also organisms that help the soil healthy such as animal droppings, leaves, where the land is located whether it is in a valley or high in the mountain and the most important of all is the climate.
What are the effect if you grow a plant on a contaminated soil?
You have to first know what type of soil and what type of toxins that is present, how severe the soil contamination, how much toxins will it enters the plant. Sandy soil are less likely to hold any chemicals as compared to soil that contains organic matter such as peat moss often hold on to all sorts of contaminants and this has an effect on the metabolic state of the microorganisms in the soil.
Soil contamination also has an effect on people who touch it, but it depends on what type of contaminant. Whether a small animals or humans dig a hole in it, the soil will then dry up and the contaminated particles will be inhaled by both humans and animals while other dust particles will be absorbed by the skin. So, what causes the soil contamination?
These oil spills, pipe line leaks, toxic spills have been used by factories, gas stations, mining, and airports and for such they are one of the reasons why there are soil contaminations. Other soil contaminant contributor are the toxic pesticides that are being used in other countries, the over use of fertilizers and this are being used all over the world.
If ever natural disaster strikes such as tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes, any facilities that stores toxins will be damaged and thus the chemicals will then leak and can cause soil contamination. In south New Orleans, there is a large area where the soil is contaminated after a hurricane hit the state and it destroyed a lot of holding facilities and over a million gallons of toxic that is being absorbed by the soil after the hurricane.
What are health problems and concerns that it might have an effect on humans?
As an example, China has very little legislation when it comes to protecting the soil from contamination. In China, 10th of its land is contaminated and heir land is being irrigated by polluted water wherein the effects of soil contamination is devastating and can have great effect on the health of its population which causes kidney, liver and leukemia.
